Yummikeys and the Environment

Yummikeys toys are proudly plastic free and we have worked hard, and continue to work, to be an environmentally sound brand. Here's a bit about us from a green perspective:

  • Yes Yummikeys are made in China. This is unfortunately not a choice because there are  no stainless factories in the UK who do this kind of manufacturing, the ones we have left produce large architectural steel. In China luxury stainless steel jewellery is very popular so they have many manufacturers and advanced processes.

  • Yummikeys are shipped over  from China and not flown which is very different for carbon emissions'

  •  Stainless steel itself is made from 70% recycled steel so the carbon footprint initially is way lower than almost any other material. Metal can be recycled without loss of quality, unlike plastic, so it can continue to be fully reused.

  • Yummikeys will last for a very long time and will not rust so they and are in no way a throw away disposable consumer item. They are also a special keepsake and most customer do keep them after their baby grows out of them.

  • A circular economy (often referred to simply as "circularity") is an economic system aimed at eliminating waste and the continual use of resources. Circular systems employ reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing and recycling to create a close-loop system, minimising the use of resource inputs and the creation of waste, pollution and carbon emissions. In terms of the circular economy by nature being 70% recycled stainless steel is very much a part of a circular business model. The vast majority of customers keep Yummikeys for a keepsake or future baby.

Future plans:

  • We have a small amount of plastic on our packaging which will be removed from Spring 2020.

  • We are in the process of calculating the carbon output for each product and once we have a reliable set of datawe intend to launch a carbon offsetting promamme and to become carbon neutral.

  • We will set up a Facebook group to buy and sell second hand Yummikeys toys and are investigating a refurbishing programme as part of this.
